Working on a Occupied Campus
The Texas School for the Blind & Visually Impaired (TSBVI) selected our firm to build eight new structures on three campus sites. Our work included:
- six, single-story residences
- one administrative building
- a recreational facility
- site demolition, utilities and site work
Our entire team worked diligently to complete the construction on this active campus as quickly as possible. TSBVI is a year-round, 24/7 school so careful scheduling and coordination of shutdowns and electrical and water hook up testing was required. This work was completed during the spring and Christmas breaks—the only time that students were off campus.
As with any project on an occupied campus, a detailed safety plan was outlined for the construction. At TSBVI, our staff, subconsultants and vendors delivering materials were required to follow campus rules, including special considerations for visually impaired pedestrians.
Right at Home
Our staff demolished the existing elementary residential facility, cleared and prepared the site and constructed a new, modern facility for the students. This new 16,000sf facility complies with all ADA standards, as well as special requirements from TSBVI representatives. Additional requirements included variances for special millwork including cabinetry and lavatory equipment heights.
