Expanding Education
Our firm was selected by the New York City School Construction Authority (NYCSCA) to build a new, approximately 111,000sf, K–8 public school educational facility in the Concord neighborhood of Staten Island.
When the overcrowded PS 48 population moves across the street to the new PS/IS 71R building, the students will have access to:
- new classrooms
- a gymnasium
- “gymnatorium” (a combination of a gymnasium and auditorium)
- science lab
- art studio
- library
School Features
The educational facility will have the capacity for 844 students, including 72 special-education students. The new buildings façade will be largely masonry cavity wall, which will provide better sound and heat insulation, and resistance to rain penetration. The gymnasium will feature a barrel-vaulted standing seam roof and a second “gymnatorium” will have fixed and retractable seating and may be used for either athletic events or as a performance and assembly space.
A large sitework package is also planned for the new school and surrounding vicinity, which will include a playground, early childhood center playgrounds and additional parking spaces. A new private driveway for school bus traffic/drop-off location is also part of the program. In addition, sidewalk repairs and street tree planting will be conducted along Targee Street, Richmond Road and Venice Avenue. The new educational facility will meet NYCSCA Green Schools Guidelines.
