Construction Challenges Met
Manhattan College’s increased demand for student housing required the expertise of our firm to oversee all aspects of the new construction of Hayden Hall—East Hill Tower II. Tower II was constructed in the logistically challenging sloped mountainside. The new 134,000sf, 10-story structure houses 539 students in 269 double rooms. Manhattan College also required a new parking structure to accommodate additional vehicles. A new prefabricated pedestrian bridge crossing over a parkway connects the 209,000sf, 550-car garage directly to the new Tower II.
The close proximity of NY MTA foundations and structures created many challenges for the project team. Tower II required extensive rock removal and excavating to prepare the site. The project team coordinated extensively to successfully complete site inspections, soil tests, pile driving, reinforcement and installation of retaining walls. Utilizing seismic controls and monitors enabled the site team to ensure no disruption to the surrounding buildings in this heavily congested site
Construction Challenges Met
Campus Safety
Safety and access were fundamental aspects of our detailed logistics plan. Located in a highly traveled area of campus, our staff installed a sidewalk bridge and jersey barriers, and expanded the service roadway to aid in the protection of students and campus staff. Site safety meetings were held on a weekly basis to address any concerns or special needs the College had. Further, we were required to share a narrow driveway that provides access to a very busy campus loading dock. This entailed significant coordination of deliveries with the College’s facility department.
