Green Design
New York Academy of Sciences, founded in 1817, is a federally funded organization uniting scientists from around the world to advance the understanding of science, technology and medicine. Our firm constructed the Academy’s 40,000sf office, comprised of a 300-person auditorium with state-of-the-art audio/visual technology, a boardroom, 10,000sf conference space, office spaces and an art-exhibition gallery.
The design maximized the use of sustainable products including 100% recycled workstation panels, 40% recycled material carpeting and zoned heating and cooling. The space also benefits from the floor-to-ceiling windows, capitalizing on the natural lighting. The overhead lighting is controlled with motion and light sensors and is often not needed on a sunny day. Shades were installed on the south side of the floor to shade the facility as necessary.
Site-Safety
Working in the occupied 52-story building in busy downtown New York City, our staff left no stone unturned when addressing the issue of safety. A site-specific safety plan mapped out our firm’s approach to keeping all project teams, building tenants and passing pedestrians safe at all times. Appropriate signage and temporary walkways were constructed to protect those passing outside the building. Materials were transported via the freight elevator so as to not interfere with the busy traffic of building employees.
