Preserving Tradition While Meeting 21st Century Needs
Citizens Bank Park, a 43,000-seat, world-class Ballpark, is the ultimate baseball and entertainment experience—natural grass, a dirt playing field and a scenic view of the Philadelphia’s skyline. The goal of the stadium was to place the fans closer to the action. To achieve this, the field was recessed 23ft below street level enclosed with bowl-style seating inspired by the Baker Bowl and Connie Mack Stadium, which housed the team until 1971. The bowl is surrounded on three sides by buildings containing the main box office, sports pub and cafe, team store, concessions, offices and services. This new venue combines the essence of Philadelphia’s rich tradition of sports architecture with an unmistakably modern 21st century style.
Brining the Inside Out
The Phillies Ballpark has many state-of-the-art features with four grand entrance plazas flanked by the steel framed seating bowl and 50ft high glass enclosed towers at home plate, third base and first base that glow at night when lighted. Additional design aspects include:
- bi-level bullpens in right center field with a special viewing area for fans
- a signature scoreboard structure with a restaurant in the second level
- rooftop bleacher seats
- outfield entertainment area
- parking for approx. 20,000 vehicles
Adding to the Ballpark’s many fan specific design elements is the unique opportunity to catch a glimpse of the field from outside the gates. The design enabled a walk-around, open-air concourse that was intentionally created to keep fans connected to the game at all times.
