Building Upgrades
Our firm was selected to provide construction management services for the renovation of the five-story US Customs House in Houston, TX, which has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974. The building occupies an entire block in the central business district and its tenants include all branches of the military, the Military Entrance Processing Command Center, Secret Service, US Postal Service and US Marshal Service. The 600,000sf project was completed on a 16-month schedule and entailed 37 phases. Improvements to the building, constructed in the early 1900s, included all new mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems; elevators; and new exterior windows. Replacement of the boilers and chillers in the basement was done by the use of ADA Granite ramps due to no elevator access.
Landmark Status
Careful consideration was given to preserving the historical integrity of the building. All aspects of the project from demolition to restoration had to be reviewed and approved by the Historical Society. We maintained all paperwork as well as advised on how to preserve, remove or duplicate built-in-place wood walls, door frames and ceilings.
