A Facelift to Preserve
the Historic Landmark

The historic 100-year-old Texas State Capitol underwent a massive renovation. The exterior preservation and grounds restoration of the landmark building is one of the most prestigious projects completed by our firm. The 360,000sf renaissance revival building posed many challenges to the team—most notably, maintaining the integrity of the historic landmark. Work included restoring and replacing the cast iron architectural features. Restoration also included the removal of existing paint on the dome and application of new paint. In order to complete the work, the entire dome was scaffolded from top to bottom, and finishes were carefully restored to match historic photographs and documents.

Meticulously Maintained Grounds

Restoration of the grounds began with the installation of new infrastructure, including fire protection systems, electric service, outdoor lighting, water-conserving irrigation and handicap-accessible walkways. The historic Great Walk and Oval Walk were reconstructed to their original configurations, the grounds were regraded, new sod was laid and more than 190 trees were planted on the 23-acre site. The historic, custom iron fencing was reconditioned and reinstalled to mimic the original fencing. The existing cast-iron pole lighting was restored and supplemented with additional tree-mounted lighting. Lastly, the roads surrounding the Capitol were reconditioned with new base and asphalt to correct the existing drainage problems.
