Renovation During Church Mass

The doors to St. Patrick’s Cathedral swept open in 1879 and since then the gothic-style Church has seen its share of renovation. Structure Tone has stepped in to be part of its history as construction manager for the renovation of the Cathedral, Rectory and Archbishop’s House. Extensive planning and surveys were conducted for the logistics, site-safety plan and schedule that would accommodate holidays, daily masses and millions of tourists. The work was phased to accommodate the Church’s operational requirements. The protection of the landmark and public was top priority.

Rectory is Rectified

The interior of the Rectory was demolished and restored with new electrical, mechanical, fire-suppression and plumbing infrastructure. An extensive window program was underway while the interior was under construction. The windows were restored with new counterweights and insulated glass or re-fabricated to match the historic windows. A new elevator was also installed and the bulkhead rebuilt and clad in copper.

The overall project entails:

• upgrading infrastructure, life safety systems and emergency egress
• disassembling, cleaning, reassembling and re-installing windows
• stabilizing stonework; reconfiguring flashing; replacing all sealant joints; and modifying the roof
• adding office spaces, maintenance areas, storage and general use areas
• installing a new central utilities plant
