Building Renovation and Repurpose
We repurposed an existing 70,000sf, two-story structure into Hofstra’s new Interim Medical School Building. The existing building had been expanded over time without a long-term plan. With varied ceiling and floor heights and awkward transitions, we renovated the disjointed building. Work entailed:
- extensive structural renovations
- masonry facade restoration
- installation of 200 windows
- removal of half the structure to facilitate a tiered auditorium and two-story entrance
- construction of a new curved wall leading from the expanded parking area to the building
- installation of new lighting, sidewalks and bike rack
- excavation and installation of all new drainage structures
Anatomy of the Building
Working closely with Hofstra facilities personnel and the team, we completed the project on-time, within budget and achieved accreditation as a university medical institution. The new facility includes:
- a state-of-the-art anatomy lab, classrooms and lecture halls
- medical library
- tiered, 120-seat auditorium
- two-story atrium/entrance
- faculty offices, administration area, cafeteria and locker rooms
The 20-work station anatomy lab is the main focus of the building. To support the needs of the anatomy lab and overall medical school there was a complete upgrade to the infrastructure, which included:
- humidification and de-humidification systems
- special walk-in refrigeration for the medical cadavers
- new electrical and gas service as well as installation of custom air conditioner units
- HVAC, fire alarm and protection and security systems
- state-of-the-art audio/visual systems—the anatomy lab has the capability to broadcast their activities throughout the facility
