Going Green Saves Green
Construction of the 9,000sf Dallas Center for Architecture (DCFA) represents an exciting evolution for the design community in the Dallas metroplex. The DCFA was designed and constructed to have as little impact on the environment as possible. The team achieved the goal of LEED Silver certification while also proving that LEED Silver certification doesn’t have to significantly increase the project budget. Practical and reasonable measures were taken to produce the sustainable space. During the value management sessions an 80% post-consumer recycled flooring material was recommended and substituted for the original floors specified. This change not only maintained DCFA’s commitment to the LEED program, but also saved $70,000, roughly 7% of the budget.
The Crinkle Wall
The focal point of the DCFA is the multi-purpose board and conference rooms. This focal point is enclosed by what is commonly known as the "crinkle wall," which is faceted acid-etched glass. The glass creates privacy for the rooms in the center of the space. At night, it slowly changes colors, providing an enticing backdrop for events. One of the most challenging aspects of the project, the crinkle wall was constructed with over 120 individual pieces of glass. One, two and three-ft sections were placed together at various angles to give it the unique "crinkle" effect. The centerpiece was flawlessly executed creating a striking space, which has created a buzz within the city.
