Meeting BSL-2 Standards

Renowned as a leading research institution, particularly in cancer research, the University of Texas Health Center at San Antonio selected our firm to perform exterior and interior construction at one of its facilities, Texas Research Park. This facility houses approximately 5,000 specimens for testing and was constructed to achieve BSL-2 standards (Biohazard Security Level-2).

To protect those who enter the 20,000sf lab, as well the immediate outside environment from hazardous agents, interior finishes included new mason unit walls and segmental retaining walls and ceilings to maintain complete containment; bio-resistant epoxy paint; and solid silicone and epoxy composite non-slip floor coatings. Work also included construction of 100lf of concrete road and 100lf of new paved road as entry to the loading dock, as well as an exterior loading dock with security door for entry.

Supporting Systems

Extensive mechanical, electrical and plumbing work was required in order to ensure the new labs would effectively meet the University’s needs. Mechanical and plumbing work consisted of extensive spiral and sheet metal duct work with sound, fire and bio-filter dampers as well as eyewash-equipped, floor pedal activated sinks. Electrical work included custom, silicone sealed outlets, boxes, conduits and wiring. Additionally, control systems were installed for climate, lighting and individual room security.
