LEED Silver Data Center

Our firm provided construction management services for a data center expansion in Missouri. The expansion encompassed over 140,000sf of new construction, including:

  • a new two-story, Tier IV, 118,000sf LEED Silver data center, constructed with a Seismic Zone B, F-3 tornado-resistant steel frame and a precast structural concrete skin
  • 22,000sf single-story addition that connects the new data center to an existing one
  • 6,500sf of office space
  • 7,700sf generator building to support the data center
  • 3,400sf four-cell concrete cooling tower with supporting thermal, condenser and rainwater storage tanks

After expansion, this new Tier IV facility operates on a 7.5MW power supply and has 26,000sf of raised access floor that is expandable to 50,000sf.

BIM Plan

Due to the new facility’s location and because it was built adjacent to an existing live data center, the project team faced some unique challenges. A project-specific Building Information Modeling (BIM) plan was established. By implementing the BIM plan during the preconstruction phase, and utilizing BIM throughout the construction phase (through clash detection/space allocation guidelines), the team was able to create a fully coordinated virtual model of the facility’s building systems and structural frame prior to any work being performed in the field. This integrated BIM modeling plan contributed to eliminating increases in project cost and mitigated potential schedule delays and re-work in the field.
