Structure Tone provided construction services for the conversion and upgrade of two telecommunication facilities located in Philadelphia.

To build the company's eighth video hub data center, Structure Tone demolished and gutted the entire building’s interior. Then the team installed a 10,000sf data center, two new generators, four CRAC units, one rooftop unit, new access flooring and multiple offices. In addition, site work and modifications to the existing building structure were performed and all electrical systems were upgraded. Our team was able to complete the project meeting the aggressive schedule.

In another building in Philadelphia, Structure Tone upgraded the client’s generator room. The scope of work entailed 2,000sf of space and consisted of adding one 1,250kW generator with fuel tanks and new ATS. The existing mechanical system, piping and condensers were demolished and new masonry, electric room and miscellaneous upgrades were constructed.

Design Modifications

The client chose to build its video hub data center in a 12,000sf facility that had been previously occupied and consisted of an old parking garage and a small office space used to house trucks and equipment. The age and type of building added to the complexity of the project. The building standards of the existing structure were the exact opposite of what was needed to accommodate a modern facility, with precision equipment and systems required by the client. Our team made this conversion feasible by modifying the client’s layout and design to fit the existing structure as construction progressed.

Scheduling

Adding to the complexity was an extremely aggressive construction schedule that required our team to have the space ready in order to allow the client to start its phase two installations. As our team started demolition, the client requested that we handle the building permit filing. This six-week process pushed our team to start the project in a room with no walls, floors or ceilings installed. By working around the clock our team was able to complete the space on time.
